Four students laughingJuly Competency Focus - Inclusion & Belonging

The National Association of Colleges and Employers defines inclusion and belonging as demonstrating the awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to equitably engage and include people from different local and global cultures. Also, engaging in anti-oppressive practices that actively challenge the systems, structures, and policies of racism and inequity. Level-Up Experiences

The following are recommended ways for you to practice and level-up your equity and inclusion skills this month within your current job. Feel free to use these suggestions or come up with your own. Once you have finished an experience, be sure to add it to your accomplishment tracker.

Get Feedback From Multiple Perspectives

Prepare: For your next work or school project, brainstorm some people whose diversity and experiences could elevate your project.

Take Action: After you think of a few individuals, ask them their thoughts and if they have any feedback. It is important to get opinions from a diverse group.

Reflect: Reflect on how their insights changed this project. Think about how these changes make the project more inclusive to larger audience.

Seek Experiences with Other Cultures

Prepare: Think of ways you can learn more about other cultures. Especially through interacting with other cultures. This could be an event, a class, or having a friend teach you about their culture.

Take Action: Go into learning about this other culture with an open mind. Ask questions and be respectful.

Reflect: Reflect on what you learned from this experience. How has the experience helped you grow professionally and personally?

Use Inclusive Language

Prepare: Do some research on inclusive language. What phrase and terms are not inclusive. How can you change your vocabulary to be more inclusive?

Take Action: Practice what you learned! Make sure to always speak inclusively no matter who you are speaking with.

Reflect: Reflect on areas you need improvement. You can always ask someone close to you to keep you accountable.
