Level-Up Experiences

The following are recommended ways for you to practice and level-up your critical thinking skills this month within your current job.  Feel free to use these suggestions or come up with your own. Once you have finished an experience, be sure to add it to your accomplishment tracker.

Research Logical Fallacies:

Prepare: Research basic logical fallacies and how they impact argumentation. The linked articles will get you started, but feel free to look at your own resources.

Take Action: Commit a short list of logical fallacies to memory, review them regularly, and be ready to apply them in any circumstance.

Reflect: Do you use logical fallacies in conversation? Do logical fallacies find their way into your mental thought process? How can you utilize your new learnings in your work, studies, or personal life?

Create a Mind Map:

Prepare: Mind maps are an excellent tool to analyze our own critical thinking. Begin by researching the methods, utility, and examples of mind maps.

Take Action: When presented with a difficult task, establish an end result, then develop a mind map to determine all decisions you must make in order to arrive at that destination.

Reflect: Ask yourself the following questions; What does my mind map teach me about my critical thinking skills? Are there other, potentially more efficient or effective ways to reach the same goal?

Practice Critical Thinking with your Supervisor:

Prepare: Brainstorm different scenarios that demand critical thinking. These can be hypothetical or real scenarios.

Take Action: In your next 1:1 supervisor meeting, review your prepared scenarios and practice your approach. Keep in mind all that you have learned about critical thinking.

Reflect: What did you learn about your own critical thinking methods? Your supervisor’s?  Do you feel more prepared if you were to confront these scenarios?
