Level-Up Experiences

The following are recommended ways for you to practice and level-up your Equity and Inclusion abilities this month within your current job. Feel free to use these suggestions or come up with your own. Once you have finished an experience, be sure to add it to your accomplishment tracker.

Develop Respect for Diversity

  • Prepare - To foster respect for diversity, you can educate yourself about different cultures, religions, and backgrounds by reading books, watching documentaries, or attending workshops that promote cultural understanding and awareness.
  • Take Action - Take action by actively listening to your coworkers' experiences and perspectives. You can engage in open and respectful conversations, ask questions to learn more, and challenge your biases.
  • Reflect - How are my biases affecting my interactions with others? How can I better understand preconceptions and stereotypes?

Be an Ally

  • Prepare - Understand systematic issues and barriers faced by underrepresented individuals by educating yourself on topics such as gender, LGBTQ+, racial injustice, and disability inclusion.
  • Take Action - Taking action as an ally involves actively supporting and advocating for marginalized colleagues. You can do this by amplifying their voices in meetings and discussions, challenging discriminatory remarks or behaviors, and standing up against unfair treatment.
  • Reflect - Have I been a consistent ally to underrepresented groups in my workplace? How can I stand up for those who feel marginalized?

Demonstrate Inclusive Communication

  • Prepare - Familiarize yourself with inclusive practices. Learn the appropriate use of gender-neutral language, avoid stereotypes, and be mindful of microaggressions.
  • Take Action - Invite quieter team members to share their thoughts, summarize key points to ensure understanding, and actively challenge any exclusionary behavior or language.
  • Reflect - Have I ever unintentionally excluded or marginalized someone? If so, what are some alternative approaches?
