September Career Competency Focus - Communication
The career competency focus for the month of September is Communication! Communication is defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers as the ability to clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization. Level-Up Experiences
The following are recommended ways for you to practice and level-up your Communication skills this month within your current job. Feel free to use these suggestions or come up with your own. Once you have finished an experience, be sure to add it to your accomplishment tracker.
Practice Presenting:
- Prepare: Do some research! Find out what makes a good presentation! You can utilize LinkedIn Learn, or ask your supervisors and coworkers what they do to succeed when presenting.

Take Action: Ask your supervisor if they have any opportunities for you to do a presentation or use an opportunity in class. Plan out your presentation and practice it a few times alone.

Reflect: Reflect on how you did. Ask yourself what you can do better next time.
Practice Writing a Professional Email:
- Prepare: Research examples of professional emails or look at emails that have been sent to you. Take some time to make notes about what all of these emails have in common.

Take Action: The next time you need to send an email make sure it is professional. Include correct spelling, grammar, subject line, and proper sign-off. No matter what the email is for, use it as an opportunity to practice.

Reflect: Take some time to look over your email. You can have your supervisor look over it and make suggestions or compare it side by side with examples you found. From there, take note of what you need to fix or include for previous emails.
Work as a Team:
- Prepare: Set clear goals of what you want to accomplish by working in a team. Do you want to focus on communicating interpersonally? Do you want to practice your conflict resolution skills? Working in a group gives you an opportunity to practice many communication skills. Do your research on how to effectively reach your goals.

Take Action: If you get a chance to work in a group, whether it be in class or at work, take it! Remember your goal and research. Use this opportunity to improve your skills.

Reflect: After working in a group, reflect on what you could have done better. Did you achieve your goal? Make note of what you want to improve on for next time.
