January Career Competency Focus - Professionalism
The National Association of Colleges and Employers defined professionalism as proactively developing oneself and one’s career through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of one's strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and networking to build relationships within and without one’s organization. Professionalism can greatly set you apart from other potential candidates and is very important to employers.

Level-Up Experiences
The following are recommended ways for you to practice and level-up your professionalism skills this month within your current job. Feel free to use these suggestions or come up with your own. Once you have finished an experience, be sure to add it to your accomplishment tracker.
Go the Extra Mile
Prepare: The people who reflect professionalism the most are those who continue to learn and improve. Reflect on the effort you put into your everyday tasks at work. Ask yourself if you are going above and beyond with the work you do.
Take Action: While working on your everyday tasks, focus on giving it your full effort and making sure each piece of your work is your best.
Reflect: Look over your work or reflect on past work and see how you can improve. You could also ask your supervisors for any constructive criticism they have.
Improve your Workplace
Prepare: Think of ways your workplace can be improved through your work and attitude. Reflect on how your level of professionalism might impact your workplace culture.
Take Action: In your workplace, make an effort to create an inclusive environment and effectively communicate with those you are working with. If you notice a problem, take the initiative to fix it.
Reflect: Reflect on how your effort and commitment can impact your workplace positively. Reflect on how you can continue to improve your work environment.
Practice Self-Awareness
Prepare: Self-awareness is crucial for being professional. Consider how you interact with others at work. Also, you can think of those you view as professional, such as a supervisor, and make note of the differences in how they interact with others in the workplace.
Take Action: When interacting with your coworkers, supervisors, or any people at your place of work make sure you are acting appropriately for the environment. Avoid things such as oversharing, inappropriate language, lying, or gossiping.
Reflect: After improving your self-awareness skills, reflect on your professionalism skills overall. Do you notice a difference in your interactions?
