Why this matters
At ASU, our charter calls for an institution measured by whom it includes and how they succeed.
With Work+, we enact that commitment by making student employment an intentional working and learning experience. Approximately 10,000 students work at ASU each year, creating an opportunity to build transferable skills and career readiness at scale. Internships, while valuable, just aren’t accessible at scale.
That’s where student employment comes in.
Most college students are stretched thin
They work 11-20 hours per week, and nearly a quarter hold an additional off-campus job. We can’t continue to tell students to “add more.”
For many working learners, adding an internship alongside work and school may not be realistic. At ASU, 50% of working learners have high or very high financial need, and many students face additional barriers to accessing traditional career-building experiences.

The Opportunity
Many students work out of necessity. Work+ ensures these students also gain skills, confidence, career clarity, and the ability to verbalize their learned skills to prepare them for post-graduation careers. We meet students where they are, and ensure the work they’re doing contributes to their long-term career success.

For students with high financial need, a meaningful work experience can provide both financial support and opportunities to stay connected to their education and goals.

When work and learning are intentionally connected, the time students spend working can also contribute to their academic, career, and personal growth.

Helping students recognize, develop, and articulate the skills they gain through work can better prepare them to translate their college experience into meaningful post-graduation opportunities (Strada Education Foundation).

How Work+ changes the experience
When student employment is intentionally designed as a working and learning experience, students gain more than a paycheck.
ASU student employees report building meaningful relationships, developing transferable skills, and gaining the confidence to articulate what they’ve learned through their work.

This is what intentional student employment can look like. Work+ gives supervisors and students a shared approach for making learning visible and connecting the student employment experience to what comes next.

A strategic investment in
student success
Work+ has transformed what the student employment experience looks like for 7,640 students and counting! As the official framework for ASU, it is our mission to continue to grow that number until every student worker at ASU receives the same benefit.
The work is already happening. Work+ makes the learning intentional.
